David Turner Artist Statement

For me, the muse is in the material, and gathering material is where I begin.  Stumps, branches, and stones are massed about the yard.  They become like mounds of compost, ready to feed the process.  There is something in the material that calls to me, saying: “My life’s gesture is here; can you see it?”

Working in this realm, where everything has a shape and a history, I try keeping my mind free as I cut, join, and stack the pieces together.  At the center of all the noise and repetition is something improvisational, making way for chance and the unconscious to appear and find form.
